In my time in Europe 2010 – 2011, I had the opportunity to travel to Ireland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Czech Republic and Germany to sample each respective country. While living in Japan in 2008, I extensively explored the Kansai region.
Post exchange, early 2011 I decided it was the best time to venture out to Asia to backpack for two months and explore my roots. I traveled to Japan again to explore the Kanto region and visit friends. I then went to Taiwan for the first time and spoke Mandarin on a consistent basis and felt like I was in a place where I ‘belonged’. The stories I’ve heard from my father, and places I’ve heard of so often – I can finally put sensory experiences to it. Foods I grew up eating are were plentiful there, the people friendly and the island is gorgeous. I came to appreciate the value of being multilingual and connecting with people in ways I never would’ve imagined.
I made my way through Singapore and Thailand, hitting the tropics for the first time. I laid on the pristine beaches, bartered my way through everything, pet tigers, experienced the extreme rich poor divides, watched muay thai fights and soaked up the amazing sights.
I went to Hong Kong later for the first time and got immersed in the extended family life, and spoke Cantonese consistently which was amazing. Again, like Taiwan – everything just seemed to make sense here in ways it never did when I was at home. Being in the food capital of Asia was something to behold. The hustle and bustle energy of the city was intoxicating. Last stop before I headed home was Seoul, Korea. Perhaps when I have some free time kicking around, I’ll write some posts on my thoughts on each country.
In the mean time, I dream for my next 10+ hour flight and hitting cultural/language barriers once again.
On the immediate travel bucket list is:
- China, an extended trip for 2 months minimum. Really explore the motherland
- Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Central America – would love to see the Mardi Gras and Macchu Picchu
- St Petersburg/Moscow, Russia – see an exquisite Russian ballet performance at the grand Mariinsky Theatre
- Mediterranean Europe – Greece, Italy, Malta, Cypress, Turkey, Portugal, South of Spain. The weather can’t be beat and I love the strong flavours of the Mediterranean diet.
- Northern Africa – Morroco, Egypt
- Food/photography/motorcycle trip around Spain, Italy, France
- Australia/New Zealand
